EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Worshippers at a Detroit church are among many people around Michigan honoring the birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and the 50th anniversary of his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

Eighty-three-year-old Charles Wilson told Sunday congregants at Detroit's Central United Methodist Church that young people need to learn what older generations went through in the struggle for civil rights.

In East Lansing, Michigan State University's College of Music was hosting two free concerts honoring King on Sunday at the Wharton Center.

Detroit Public Schools is launching a day of service to celebrate King's birthday Monday.

The Thomas Cooley Law School hosts an event Monday at the Auburn Hills campus to mark the occasion, starting at 9 a.m.
