Starting Wednesday, those who live in East Lansing will have to pay more attention to their curbside trash.
Last week, the East Lansing City Council passed an ordinance, shortening the notification period for bulk item violations. Bulk items are furniture, appliances, carpet, mattresses and anything else exceeding 40 pounds. If those items are placed on the curb without a scheduled pickup or on the wrong day, they are considered a violation.
Currently, bulk items can be on the curb for three days before a pickup, but the new ordinance shortens that period from eight or two hours, depending on the notification. If items are not removed, fines can reach up to $220. City Manager George Lahanas says the new rules promote safety and a clean community and could help keep students from burning couches.
