Downtown Gears Up for Common Ground Kickoff

It's all hands on deck as the stage gets set for the 14th annual Common Ground music festival in downtown Lansing.

Workers and volunteers were out in full force on Friday setting up stages and seating for the kick off of the festival on July 8.

It's music to the ears of Tristyn Wright Meyer, the vice president of Lansing Entertainment, who said the festival is a big bump for the city.

"Each year it does keep on growing and it does have an impact on the surrounding downtown Lansing area," she said. "People think it's a positive thing and it's great for the economy."

Area businesses seem to agree.

Jason Evans, general manager of the Nuthouse Sports Grill said the festival is a win for everyone involved.

"Every year it's been pretty good and every night people are excited to be out," Evans said. "They're excited to go to the show so it's a really fun atmosphere."

Evans said his employees enjoy the extra money from working the added shifts during the week to keep up with the increased crowds.

Back at the festival, one of the big changes visitors will probably notice first is the different entrance location.

With festival goers now entering over the bridge on the north east side of Adado Park, Scott Keith, an organizer with the event, said visitors will get a great first view of the city's skyline.

"We noticed last year people lining up with the traffic got a little concerned about their safety so we feel like we have a better area for the lines now," Keith said.

"As you come across the pedestrian bridge you see the main stage and the Capitol dome right behind it and that really adds to the excitement."

There's also an app festival goers can download to find the nearest food, attractions and even restrooms during the event.

The festival begins July 8 with the Barenaked Ladies and runs through July 14.
