The Livonia police chief says one of his officers was shot to death in an exchange of gunfire with two burglary suspects, and one suspect also died.
Chief Robert Stevenson says 48-year-old Officer Larry Nehasil was a 20-year veteran of the suburban Detroit police department and worked for the Wayne County sheriff before that.
The shootings happened about 6 p.m. Monday in Walled Lake, which is about 10 miles north-northwest of Livonia.
Stevenson says police arrested the second suspect. He says additional information about the shootings will come from the Oakland county sheriff's department. That agency had no further information late Monday.
Stevenson tells reporters that Nehasil is the first Livonia officer killed during a felony. He says an officer died in a crash in the 1950s.
