Detroit Area Schools Cancel Classes So Teachers Can Attend Protest

Two Detroit area school districts have canceled classes for Thursday to allow teachers to protest in Lansing.

The Taylor School District and Warren Consolidated Schools announced the closings on Monday after hearing many of their teachers were taking the day off.

In a letter posted on the Warren Consolidated Schools website, Superintendent Robert Livernois said the district will be closed "just like when we have a snow day."

"While I understand this is somewhat unusual," Livernois went on to say, "my number one priority is student safety and without an adequate number of staff members, we cannot hold school."

The teachers intend to join other union members to protest right to work legislation at the Capitol.

name: I was not suggesting we transport kids on unsafe roads. I was laughing at the comparison the district made to closing schools to attend protests and closing schools for weather related events. Not even close in my book. On the day of the protests, there would have been kids in the schools if the teachers were there. No wonder we lag behind many of the "third world" countries in eductaion.

I believe these were the only teachers in the state of Michigan that were "given" this day off. The rest were in their classrooms because they care about kids and the future of Michigan. Mark: Are you suggesting we transport children by bus on roads that are not meant for travel? We have snow days to keep children safe. If there are no children then there is no need for a teacher to be at school on that day either.

I'm a union member (whether I want to be or not--at least now I'll have a choice) who provides direct patient care to people on life support systems...how come I wasn't given the day off to protest??? NO FAIR!!

Louise...if the fact you use the term "moneyed elite" doesn't prove a jealousy of those with wealth I don't what would?? Workers will now have the right to decide for themselves as to whether they would like to be part of a union...they can "look out for themselves". I'd like to see these unions (I'm a in a union too)actually compete for my dues for a change!

Thank you teachers for standing up to the elite who only want to grind down the rest of us. The moneyed elite increasingly pledge allegiance to the GLOBAL economy, not the United States. No, I am not jealous of wealth, or a socialist. I do believe workers must be allowed to look out for themselves.

I see how important these kids and their education are to these teachers. I hope they are not getting paid for leaving our children behind. Everytime their budgets are cut you hear from a teacher "it is the children that suffer." Well since the teachers have basically walked out on their responsibilities, guess what "it is the children that suffer." It is also the taxpayer that suffers because we are paying your salary to leave our children behind. I hope they are not getting paid. Great lesson to teach our kids. "My needs are more important than your education."

Maybe after the protest they can abandon the kids again and go get some of that "free bacon" from Obama that they should be getting in exchange for their votes. Just like a snow day? more like any old excuse to get out of doing their jobs.

More proof that unions have outlived their usefulness. These teachers don't care about kids. Only people who want to belong to unions are those too lazy to perform a job or too stupid to negotiate their own salaries and benefits. These union thugs are the scum of society and I love crossing union picket lines.
