Dentists Raise Awareness for Bone Marrow Registry

Headed to the dentist soon? You may be asked to help save lives.

Members of the Michigan Dental Assoc. were at the Capitol Thursday to talk about how they're working to expand the International Bone Marrow Registry.

All it take is a couple of cheek swabs and some quick paperwork, and you're registered for life.

"Most people aren't really aware of this," says Dentist Steven Conlon, who organized the event. "We have the ability through our relationship with patients to explain the need and encourage them to become potential donors."

Organizers say the odds you'll be a match are slim. About one in 500 people is ever contacted.
