A Quality Dairy, Speedway and barber shop in Delta Township had to be shut down for several hours after a contractor installing fiber-optic cable hit a gas service line, causing a leak.

The incident happened at 2 PM Friday when Arialink Services, a contractor installing fiber-optic cable for Mount Hope Church, caused a gas leak in front of a Quality Dairy near the intersection of Creyts and St. Joseph's Highway.

Delta Township Fire and Consumers Energy responded and with the help of Eaton County Sheriff's, evactuated three businesses and closed off traffic a quarter of a mile in each direction.

Just before 5, the leak was stopped and St. Joseph's Highway was opened up. A half hour later, everything was open except for the Quality Dairy.

Delta Township's fire chief says Arialink Services will be forced to pay back the fire department and Consumers for the time and crews that fixed the problem. They could also face civil action because of lost business at the businesses affected by the evacuations and blocked roads.

Arialink Services did not respond to requests for comment.

They did use the Miss Dig service. The area was marked. That is why the contractor has to pay for the damages.

How can this contractor be so ignorant as to not use a utility locater service such as Miss Dig prior to excavating?? Unbelievable.
