LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is planning a series of public meetings on proposed fishing regulations and fisheries management policies.

Officials also will explain newly adopted changes to rules that deal specifically with northern pike and muskellunge.

Regulations for northern pike include a statewide 24-inch minimum size limit, a five-fish bag limit with only one fish greater than 24-inches allowed in the daily limit, and a 24-inch to 34-inch protected slot limit.

For muskellunge, the possession limit this year will be one fish per season.

Fisheries managers may discuss either species at the meetings, depending on the geographical area.

A dozen meetings will be held, starting Tuesday in Cadillac and ending April 11 in Iron Mountain.

I am glad to see slot limits being discussed. Many other states use them with great success. The fish populations are healthier and they have more trophy sized fish. They need to include these slot limits for other species as well. I know people complain about having all of these rules to memorize. Well to bad. Read the rule book. Take one with you when you head out on the water. Enjoy fishing for the sport and be thankful you can harvest at all. There is no need to keep everything you catch. Oh yeah, the DNR is not a joke. Currently, the department is not managed very well if at all. With the right person managing it and the with the right officers, it will be capable of good things again.

The DNR is a total joke. nothing these clowns do ever makes enjoying the state resources enjoyable. All they can think of is how to jerk people around and make things as difficult as possible. This messed up department needs to be elimnated A.S.A.P. Thank You. Ricardo
