MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) -- A committee has appointed Capt. Anthony Wickersham to Macomb sheriff, succeeding Mark Hackel who was elected county executive in November.
Wickersham will assume sheriff's duties when Hackel takes over the newly created office in January.
The department says Friday in a release that the 49-year-old Wickersham will serve until 2012 when county voters select a sheriff. Six candidates were interviewed for the sheriff's job.
County Clerk Carmella Sabaugh, Prosecutor Eric Smith and Chief Circuit Judge Mark Switalski comprised the committee.
Wickersham had served as chief of staff under Hackel. He was hired by the sheriff's department in 1986 as a corrections officer.
He holds an associate degree in law enforcement from Macomb Community College and a bachelor's in interdisciplinary studies from Wayne State University.
