A string of car jackings, and one of them was caught on tape.

Detroit Police are trying to get to the bottom of it. Security camera footage shows a woman near her car getting ready for a birthday party, when a carjacker slips into the drivers seat. There's just enough time for her to get her child out of the backseat and run away.

Detroit's police chief says carjackings in the city are actually down 33-percent from last year.

"When you allow the environment, I've talked to too many citizens who are troubled by the loitering, sometimes the crime taking place in front of these businesses. These are magnets for potiental carjacking," Chief James Craig said.

The police chief says party stores, gas stations and liquor stores see the most carjackings.

Police across the state are urging people to avoid leaving anything of value in their car.
