LANSING - Careless smoking may be to blame for a fire that put 6 people out of their residence. The fire took place at the South Cedar Motel in Lansing at about 3:45A.M. Wednesday, a motel who takes long-term residents. Seeing smoke and flames coming from the building, firefighters made what they call an "aggressive interior attack and search" when they arrived. No one was hurt.
It took 30 minutes to put out the main body of the fire, and they continued to douse hot-spots until six o'clock. Six people were displaced by the damage. The Red cross is assisting.
The cause of the blaze has not been determined, but in a statement to the media says they "can not rule out careless smoking per the Fire Marshall Division." Earlier media reports indicated that the fire may have been suspicious, but the fire department emphasizes that they do not consider the fire suspicious and there was no illegal activity going on in the unit where the fire originated.
