ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- The Howard Cooper Import Center in Ann Arbor is being taken over by new owners later this month, but there was something Cooper wanted to give his 89 employees. Each received $1,000 for every year they worked at the dealership.

Cooper said he just wanted to thank them and he hopes "it makes a difference in their lives."

The 83-year-old sold the dealership in April to Ohio-based Germain Motor Co. He declined to say how much all of the workers received, but mechanic Bob Jenkins' check was $26,000. He has worked at the dealership 26 years.

Forty-six-year employee Sandy Reagan said Cooper received a standing ovation Wednesday morning when he gave workers the checks.

Cooper opened in 1965 as a Volkswagen dealership.

Mr. Cooper you are a saint, hearing things like this give people motivation, and realize not everyone is greedy! Things like this are too far and few between!

This is awesome. It is too bad that in today's America, it seems that the "big wigs" continue to get bigger bonuses, while the loyal workes get smaller checks. Congrats to the employees, and to Mr. Cooper, a big THANK YOU!!!

Now this is a man/employer who knows the value of loyal employees who not only worked for him but helped make him his money as well. It's sad that far too many employers fail to come even close to such generosity in showing appreciation for loyalty and years of service. In this "at-will employment" world, too many employees are basically mistreated because they have no recourse and can be fired literally at will if labeled any kind of "problem". Kudos to you, Mr. Howard - if only more would take your example and not always reward the top dogs but give props to the "little guy".
