Businesses Prep for Grand River Construction

In just a few weeks, construction signs will be a lot more common in East Lansing and Meridian Township.

Beginning in early March, MDOT will start resurfacing a major stretch of Grand River Ave. and Michigan Ave.

The project will take several months, starting at the intersection of Grand River and Coolidge Road and ending at Park Lake Road in Meridian Township.

"Hopefully we'll all make it through," said Mike Krueger, General Manager of Crunchy's bar, which sits on Grand River.

Krueger expects business to slow down during construction.

"I think it'll have some affect on it," said Krueger. "Nobody likes driving where there are orange barrels, so a lot of times, they'll take alternate routes or try to avoid the downtown area altogether."

While Krueger still expects to get enough locals in to keep the bar open, Stuart Vanis, Co-Owner of Coral Gables in Meridian Township, says his restaurant's success depends on traffic flow.

"As long as we have east-west lanes open in both directions, people should be able to find a way to get here," he said.

However, Vanis won't be sure how the construction affects his business until after it begins. Either will Conrad's Manager, Kevin Moore, who depends on a clear Grand River to keep deliveries quick.

"We're just going to have to wait and see how it functions and we're just going to do the best we can," he said. "There's nothing we can really do about it."

Krueger already has a plan to make up for losses.

"Hopefully, we'll be able to get some of the construction workers working on the project in here to eat." is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
