EAST LANSING (WILX)-- The main construction on Grand River Ave. in downtown East Lansing, finished Saturday. M-DOT re-opened both West-bound and East-bound lanes two weeks early.

"It looks great outside, come down and take a look. It's like having the Indy 500 out front," said Brad Ballein, Manager of The Student Bookstore.

Some people that were avoiding the area before are already taking advantage of the cleared roads.

"Now that it's open I'll definitely come out this way," said Sarah Choss, while shopping downtown.

The construction had been a major headache for local shops. Cottage Inn Pizza was affected more than most because the construction slowed down their delivery process.

"Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, during the lunch hour you could see back ups and cars just sitting there. That's why we got smarter about where we were going on our deliveries," said George Hoover, Owner of Cottage Inn Pizza.

Hoover says he's not surprised that construction finished in half the time expected.

"We watched them and they were working the whole time. That was the best thing about it."

With the road re-opened Hoover hopes that business will start picking up again.

"It's better access for us to reach our customers, and for our customers to reach us."

There will still be some periodic lane closures on Grand River Ave. Crews need to install brick pavement on the sidewalks, and make the final pavement markings.

Other construction closures to watch out for: Monday the Beal Street exit to Michigan Avenue will close for seven days. Crews are completing final pavements in the area.
