Recreational boating isn't just a popular activity once the weather gets nice, it's also a big money maker for the state of Michigan.
New data from the National Marine Manufacturers Association shows boating brings in $7.4 billion to Michigan, ranking third behind Florida ($10.3 billion) and California ($8.9 billion).
According to the Michigan Secretary of State's office, there are more than 907,182 watercraft registered on file. The department says boat sales went up 10% last year and are expected to increase another 10% in 2013.
The Department of Natural Resources estimates there are nearly 11,000 inland lakes in Michigan, which is also surrounded by 4 of the 5 Great Lakes.
