Big Changes Awaiting Lansing Students

"The biggest thing that's happening in our district is that our seventh and eighth graders, at least at Eastern and Sexton, are going to be in the high schools," said President of the Lansing School Board Myra Ford. So some structural changes to the buildings were necessary over the summer to accommodate restructuring of the grades.

There will also now be 12 Pre-3rd grade schools, five 4th-6th, and four kindergarten-8th. All part of the reason more than 200 teachers were reassigned to different grades or schools.

"They are excited about this. They've stood back and said, go ahead, place me somewhere else," continued Ford.

Superintendent Yvonne Caamal Canul said the same: "Teachers got to choose more or less where they were going to go based on seniority."

With disappointing scores in the school district's annual yearly report for last year, she says all these new changes will help them get better: "I'm actually glad we have schools on the priority list, because if we have problems, we need people to help us work it out."

She's tackling a lot of changes as the new Superintendent, but says it won't be like this every year: "After this year, we're gonna sort of settle and reflect, and evaluate how we've done things, and then after that, it's another move a little bit smaller."

All she's looking forward to now is the reaction from students when they come back to class Tuesday. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
