Democrat Virg Bernero says Rick Snyder, his Republican rival for Michigan governor, might sell the Mackinac Bridge to raise money if elected. A Snyder spokesman denies it.
Bernero held a rally Tuesday at the bridge to denounce the idea.
In a phone interview with The Associated Press, Bernero referred to an online report about a recent meeting between Snyder and experts about ways to close the state's budget deficit, including privatizing services.
The report said Snyder later was asked on a radio program about selling the Mackinac Bridge and other assets, and he responded, "Everything is on the table."
Bernero said he was "stunned" that Snyder would consider selling the iconic bridge.
Snyder spokesman Bill Nowling said Snyder had no intention of selling the bridge and had never said otherwise.
