Attorney: Escapted Inmate Has Mental Illnesses

DETROIT -- The lawyer for a man accused of stabbing a sheriff's deputy in the neck and carjacking a motorist in Detroit says his client's mental health was an issue in a past criminal case.
Defense attorney James Howarth told The Associated Press that 25-year-old Derreck White has experienced hallucinations. Howarth says White wouldn't have acted this way "in his right mind" and "something is very wrong."
White's Monday morning escape prompted a courthouse lockdown and a manhunt. He's accused of stabbing a deputy with a sharp comb. The deputy is injured but OK.
White was supposed to be sentenced Monday after a recent conviction on carjacking and other charges. His attorney says he was found competent to stand trial after a mental health exam.
