Napoleon Township police arrested a man who allegedly was pointing a shotgun at the head of a 79-year-old man last night.
At 10:20 p.m. Thursday, an officer found a parked vehicle with its engine running and one headlight out on the 4500 block of Ackerson Lake Drive.
As he was checking on it, the officer heard a loud noise from a nearby home.
He looked and saw a young black man standing in the doorway, pointing a shotgun at the head of the elderly man who lived there.
Police say the gunman had apparently hit the victim in the back of the head with the butt of his gun.
Also, the front door had apparently been kicked in.
The officer drew his gun and told the man with the shotgun to put his weapon on the floor.
After a short hesitation, the gunman did so.
The 19-year-old man was then arrested.
During the incident, someone drove off in the vehicle that had been parked nearby, possibly another suspect involved in the crime.
Police are investigating, but believe the first man had gone to the house to rob the victim.
It's not known if the two had had any previous contact.
Both the victim and the gunman were taken to the hospital.
The victim was treated for his wound.
The gunman was taken for observation due to unspecified actions once he was arrested.
Officers initially thought he may have overdosed on drugs; they are not saying if that proved to be true.
This has now gone to the Jackson County Prosecutor's office for review.
In a statement, Police Chief Michael Curry said, "If the officer had not been in the immediate area at the time of the robbery, the end result likely would have been much different."
