KALKASKA, Mich. (AP) -- An energy company says it plans to drill 13 hydraulic fracturing wells in the northwestern Lower Peninsula.

Encana Oil & Gas has applied for fracking permits for the wells in Kalkaska County. The Traverse City Record-Eagle says the wells would need 300 million gallons of groundwater.

Hydraulic fracturing involves pumping water, sand and chemicals into gas or oil deposits deep underground to extract energy.

Encana spokeswoman Bridget Ford says the company follows state regulations on use of groundwater for exploration.

County resident Paul Brady says the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality doesn't adequately regulate fracking wells and the large volumes of water they use.

Rick Henderson is a field operations supervisor for the state agency and says it pays close attention to drillers' groundwater use.
