"Everybody wants to make sure that their family is safe, that their home is safe during the holidays, and we have a lot of products that will make them feel more secure about leaving their home."

How secure is your home? If someone tried breaking in, how far would they get?

Already this week, there have been several break-ins in Lansing and Jackson, and those aren't the only communities dealing with thieves on a daily basis.

Whether you live in the country, the city, in a friendly neighborhood or a dangerous one, there are easy things anyone can do to protect your home from thieves without spending a fortune.

"It's hard when you have two little kids, and you're just running in and out, and it's hard to make sure that you're always locking your doors," mother Stephanie Reuter said.

Her family has experienced several car break-ins, and now they're concerned about their home on Lansing's west side. But just a quick trip to a local retailer like Menard's could make all the difference.

"Everybody wants to make sure that their family is safe, that their home is safe during the holidays, and we have a lot of products that will make them feel more secure about leaving their home," Menard's Lansing South General Manager Dennis Kimball said.

There's something for every budget, and a security expert like Ben Holben to help customers understand affordable options, like simple dead bolts no more than $10.

"It's going to be harder for someone to pick, harder for someone to bump your lock," Holben said.

There's also motion activated lights for only $8.

"They're going to look for places that are obscure that people can't see, so having everything well-lit is a big thing," Holben said.

The products can stop crime and be a deterrent, but maybe the best part besides the price is the ease.

"If you have a basic household tool kit, you can install anything [here]," Holben said.

If you're worried about installation or getting out that tool kit, for 20 bucks you can get a door security bar. Almost no installation required, except for wedging it under the door handle and locking it on the ground .The door becomes almost impossible to kick in.

"It's a low tech security system, but an effective security system," Holben said.

He recommends combining several products -- like the motion activated light, extra locks, and alarms, for the grand total of just $20. Of course, thieves' worst enemy is also man's best friend.

"We have these two dogs, they're very vocal, they let us know, and that does make us feel safe," Reuter said.

Menard's also offers top of the line security systems. You can find similar affordable products at Meijer stores and ACO Hardware.
