AG Issues Gas Gouging Warning

State Attorney General Bill Schuette has issued a warning that gasoline price gouging is illegal in Michigan as some oil production in the Gulf of Mexico could be shut down due to hurricane Isaac.
AAA Michigan said Monday that gasoline prices rose 3 cents during the previous week to a statewide average of about $3.93 per gallon ahead. That's about 14 cents a gallon more than a year earlier.
Schuette said in a release Tuesday that higher gas prices are likely, but circumstances "are not a free pass for price gouging."
The Consumer Protection Act prohibits retailers from charging a price that is grossly in excess of the price at which similar property or services are sold. Anti-trust laws also prohibit gas stations from entering into agreements to fix prices.

I like everyones comments! Hit`s the mark! Why do we never hear of any gas stations fined for gouging? We see it! Why don`t the lawmakers see it! Guess I am missing the point of the story...!

It will get worse. Obama obviously could care less about people trying to work and put food on the table. If we had bush or regan back in office, these oil companys would not pull this..Hopefully Romney would help as well. The American people have become nodders, just shake the head and say nothing watching the cost of living rise while income, and now obama care drains your wallet. I pray this great nation wakes up and sees thru what obama is pulling. Its time for a change that makes a difference. he house and senate need a good cleaning of career politicians like stabenow. 4 more years and this country will have nothing left to salvage. God Bless this great nation and the leaders and I pray its not to late to turn around the damage done to our Flag, reputation with other nations and the pawn American working class has become.

Thats BS Bush was an oil man and catered to the oil companies. With Romney people will die because of lack of health care coverage. Oh maybe that is your answer less people to buy gas.

Driving to work this morning, I travel straight down Saginaw to Grand Ledge. Every station from Admiral, Meiger, Speedway, QD, at least 12 different stations were at $4.09. If that's not fixing a price, I,m not sure what is.

3 cent difference? HA! That makes me laugh considering yesterday morning gas around town was roughly 3.89-3.99 then jumped to 4.09. Thats more than a 3 cent difference, 10-20 cents makes a difference on the pocketbook even if it is so little. Next time try reporting the actual prices, or ask the consumer what they think price gouging is. Quite frankly, I feel that the whole system price gouges and the stations are aiding. There was no need to go up 20 cents for crying out loud. Thats just ridiculous.

I'm sure my math skills may be different than yours, but yesterday the gas prices were 3.81 in the morning and 3.99 at 5pm. That isn't a three cent increase by any calculation, but I'm not a reporter. So I guess I'm just one of the sheep that is supposed to believe everything you tell me. Weather doesn't raise the prices, holiday traffick doesn't raise the prices. Gouging and greed raise the prices. No other story necessary. If you want to tell the truth and gain respect, tell it like it is: Gas Prices Raised Due to Greed. Period.
