DELTA TWP - 4,000 gallons of fuel oil was spilled at the Lansing Board of Water and Light's Erickson power plant in Delta Township. BWL spokesman Mark Nixon says the spill happened Monday evening as fuel oil was being pumped into a storage tank at the plant. Human error led to a series of valves being misaligned, and the storage tank overflowed. Approximately 4,000 gallons of the fuel oil spilled onto the ground.
The ground was frozen, which helped prevent the oil from seeping into the earth. Nixon says the spill was contained to BWL's property and was not near any lake, river, pond or other ground-level water source. He says there was no risk to public health.
The oil was removed Tuesday and Wednesday. Soil from the contaminated area will be dug up next week and disposed of in a landfill.
