VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- A $12 million federal grant is expected to help renovate a runway at Willow Run Airport.

The funding was announced Thursday by U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow and Congressmen John Dingell and John Conyers of Michigan.

The U.S. Department of Transportation funding goes to the Wayne County Airport Authority, which runs the airport and nearby Detroit Metropolitan Airport. It follows an award of $9 million from the department announced in July as part of an overall $27.3 million request.

The hope is that the renovated runway will help Willow Run's business and cargo services.

Willow Run is in Wayne County's Van Buren Township, about 25 miles west of Detroit. The airport is planning a number of upgrades and expansions in the next decade.
