A Marine from southwestern Michigan who a family friend said was expected to become a father in February has died while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan, the military announced Monday.
Sgt. Anthony D. Matteoni, 22, of Union City, died Friday in Helmand province, the Defense Department said. Matteoni was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Matteoni was a 2006 graduate of Union City High School, and he died in an accident while on patrol, The Daily Reporter of Coldwater and WWMT-TV reported. The military didn't release details of the death.
Russ Raymond, a friend of the Matteoni family, told the Battle Creek Enquirer that Matteoni had previously served in Europe. He was married this summer to Lindsy Matteoni, and they were expecting a baby girl, Raymond said.
Matteoni had joined the Marines after graduating from high school. Union City officials are planning a memorial service.
