Questions spending on office aquarium, meals and pencils.

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero is seen in an Aug. 29, 2007 photo in Lansing, Mich. Bernero said Monday, Dec. 21, 2009 he plans to create an exploratory committee as he considers challenging Lt. Gov. John Cherry and others for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination next year. The former state lawmaker will file paperwork this week and plans to decide whether to enter the race early next year. The Republican Governors Association is running another ad against Democratic gubernatorial candidate Virg Bernero, this one questioning spending by the Lansing mayor.

The 30-second ad says Bernero spent about $4,000 during his five years in office on personalized pencils and maintaining an office aquarium. It also says he spent $20,000 on food.

Bernero campaign spokesman Cullen Schwarz said Monday the food was for official city events. Bernero's predecessor David Hollister installed the fish tank, which is popular with visiting students.

Schwarz says Bernero has cut his pay and health care, given up his city car and reduced his office budget every year.

The ad ends by saying Republican Rick Snyder's fiscal responsibility plan is "priceless."

i say why vote if all people can do is lie, cheat, or attack their opponent. im sure the fishtank was there before virg. and also why vote for someone who is concerned about lining their own pockets instead of tryin to help the little guy?

The food, as the story says was for "official city events". I would imagine an un-avoidable expense for the governor. Why would he pay out of his own pocket for a party for people who work at the capital or business meetings. I do not think he used taxes for his own Personal subway run for lunch. The fish tank wasn't his idea but he kept it. Why would he use his own money to have the fish tank cleaned. The price for personal pencil is .02 more per pencil, If you get the right brand. I say vote Verg I haven't seen a flaw in his spending

I see this add and get angry all over again. who the devil does he think he is blowing money on silly stuff. Especially since the majority of the city work staff is on a 32 hour work week. Believe thats called part time. I don't care what good he may have done, what he gave up, this is not right.

In the real world persosnailed pencils are considered advertising, and they are self promoting. Therefore should have come out of his own pocket. Fish Tank-- no one in the city knows how to clean, change a filter, to maintain a tank, and this was contracted out? The food breaks down to $333.00 a month or $11.11 day or two Starbucks. Why are we paying for it. I don't care what he has given up. People are working part time for the city. This money did not need to be spent! I say Vote for Snyder. This man still is for Virg first and then the state would come some where lower on his food chain.

Gee if I wasn't already voting for Snyder, this ad in itself is priceless. We know Virg cann't do a lot of things but not be able to feed his own fish? Get real! Either he thinks we should all wait on him, or he is the laziest or dumbest person in Michigan.
