For most of us, once we find an auto insurance agency we like, we stick with it.
"We've had a couple claims in the past 35 years," Tom Birchmeier said. "They've done well for us."
"We've shopped around a little," Amber Murphy said, "but we tend to keep the same one."
But the state says that move, or lack thereof, could be costing you.
"We think they are overpaying," Melvin Butch Hollowell, the Michigan insurance consumer advocate, said. "They don't need to."
You've got to shop around to get the best deals he said. But knowing who to call, or what to ask for could be confusing. Enter a new video posted by the state Monday online.
"We do the work for the consumer," Hollowell said. "So we pretend you have a sheet of paper and a pen. We walk you through it step by step."
It's all about arming consumers.
For instance the video tells you what you must buy -- which is personal injury protection, personal property insurance and bodily injury insurance. It also tells you what you don't necessarily need, like collision or comprehensive insurance.
Hollowell said it all sounds complicated, but it doesn't have to be if you do your homework... and ask for discounts.
"You can save a lot of money," he said.
In fact, Hollowell said drivers could save anywhere from 5-50 percent off their bills.
"Fifty percent is definitely worth it," Birchmeier said. "I'll have to take a look at it."
