BLACKMAN TOWNSHIP -- Three pit bulls that attacked and severely wounded a 6-year-old Jackson County girl will be put to sleep.
Undersheriff Tom Finco tells the Jackson Citizen Patriot on Wednesday that the dogs' owner gave authorities permission to euthanize the animals.
The dogs were seized Tuesday after Tyah Norris was attacked while playing with a friend. One dog knocked the girl down and the others joined the attack.
The child was in serious condition at an Ann Arbor hospital.
Finco says the dogs were not licensed, but did have their shots.
Another girl was bitten in the face Tuesday in a separate pit bull attack in nearby Parma Township. The newspaper reports she received stitches.
Finco says that dog's owner is quarantining the animal at home for 10 days.

The part of the story missing here is what were the girls doing just before the pit bulls attacked. Did they somehow provoke the dogs? All dogs are very territorial, did the girls, perhaps unknownly, intrude? I agree with the other comments that ultimately it is the (dog) owner's responsibility for the behaviour of the dogs. As an animal lover I feel it is a pity that the dogs were killed.

To Anonymous: Your post is really very ignorant. Any breed of dog is capable of being mean. It sure does depend on how you raise them. I own a Pit Bull, and she is the sweetest dog. I have worked with animals all of my life, and the only time I was attacked was by Cocker Spaniel. Also, if the dog owner cannot handle their dogs, that is their fault. I would never allow my dog to act like that.

Kim this is for you they are not and never will be and no matter what you say I will never trust a pitbull. And Kim if it is of any importance to you my name is JB. So you can have your pitbulls and just remember one day you will be sorry for having them.

Pit Bulls are no more prone to "snap" or "turn" than ANY other breed provided they've been trained correctly. The issue is they're built more powerful so when/if they do attack they do more damage. If you are an owner than you should be aware of the situations you’re exposing your dog to and be prepared to have your dog euthanized at worst case scenario. Pit Bulls should NOT be status symbols! They can be perfect pets in the right atmosphere. I would push for a stop to unauthorized breeding of Pit Bulls and an application process to adopt, recue and rehabilitate to make sure the adoptees can provide a healthy, non abusive home environment to control the Pit Bull population. They are wonderful animals and deserve the best! BAN THE DEED, NOT THE BREED!

Anonymous on Aug 25, 2010 at 09:53 PM...this is directed to you. No wonder you post anonymous, cause what you said is non-sence! I have know people with pitbulls and as long as they are raised in a "Loving" home, they are good dogs!

Make the license fees cheaper so people can register their dogs and cats. A $2 fee is easier to swallow than a $10 or $15. Make the fines heftier if they do not register.

Well I think all pitbulls need to be taken and put to sleep. They are a dangerous dog to have around and until they are done away wiht more and more people are going to get hurt. And yes it is the dog not the onwer I lived in a apartment Where there was 2 of them and I would not turn my back on them not even for a second cause they came at me all the time when I would be out in the yard and they would be there also. The person who owned them at times could nto even control htem they would just not listen to this person at all. They would have to grab them and pull them away to get them to do what they wanted them to do. I even seen them turn on them at times so these dogs are just not safe to have and someone needs to make it so it is illegal to have them and any that are found need to be put down for the safety of it. I know I would never have one cause they can not be trusted no matter who has them. I wish the best for these children and hope they will be ok.
