The Pentagon has confirmed the death of a 23-year-old Marine from northern lower Michigan while serving in Afghanistan.

The Defense Department said Tuesday that Sgt. Jason D. Calo of Mancelona died Sunday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province.

The Traverse City Record Eagle reports Calo's survivors include his wife, Sarah, a 4-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force of Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Calo is the second Marine killed from the unit in the last two days. Nineteen-year-old Lance Cpl. Nathaniel J. A. Schultz of Safety Harbor, Fla., died Aug. 21.

The Pentagon listed Calo's home of record as Lexington, Ky.
