Dr. Earl Reisdorff, from the Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing, says a type of enterovirus that causes an intestinal "flu" is going around.
Symptoms include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. You might also get a low-grade fever, or headache.
Those symptoms usually clear up in about five days, but be sure to drink plenty of clear fluids, and avoid caffeine. See a doctor if you have bloody vomit or stool, a fever higher than 101 degrees, severe abdominal pain, or if you're vomiting for more than two days.
These viruses can cause dehydration. Symptoms of that include sunken eyes, lightheadedness, and increased thirst. See your doctor if you can't stay hydrated.
Antibiotics aren't a successful treatment for enteroviruses, but drinking something like Gatorade, or Pedialyte (for children), will help replenish the body's electrolytes.
