What's Going Around

Updated: Tue 10:40 PM, Oct 23, 2012

Strep throat is going around this week in Lansing.

Dan Moore, certified physician assistant at McLaren-Greater Lansing Internal Medicine has been treating strep this week.

Hallmark symptoms are: sudden, severe sore throat; pain when swallowing; fever over 101 degrees; tender, swollen lymph nodes; fatigue and headache. Sometimes you can see white or yellow patches on the tonsils and throat.

Kids are prone to nausea and vomiting and will sometimes develop a red rash known as Scarlet Fever.

Anyone with a sore throat and a fever should be seen by a doctor for antibiotics.

You can also take Motrin or Tylenol for fever and pain, gargle with warm salt water, rest and drink fluids.

Strep usually runs its course within three to seven days.
