Dr. Dennis Perry at Meridian Primary Care in Okemos, a partner of McLaren Greater Lansing, is treating upper respiratory infections with a lot of chest congestion and a cough that hangs on for weeks.

The main symptoms are: runny, stuffy nose; sore throat, fatigue, headache, and cough. Kids may have a low-grade fever.

To treat an upper respiratory infection, rest, take Tylenol or Ibuprofen for aches and fever control as needed, and drink lots of fluids. Breathing in steam can help loosen congestion. Over-the-counter cold medicines may help too.

Expect a cold to last for three to four days and the cough to linger for longer. If the cough lingers longer than 10 days, see a doctor to rule out any underlying infection.
