Weather Mix Threatens to Frustrate Holiday Travelers

CHICAGO (AP) -- A storm with a 2,000-mile footprint is threatening to frustrate Christmas travelers from Texas to Nova Scotia with a little of everything Mother Nature has to offer.

Forecasters say unusually warm weather in the East and very cold air in the Midwest could produce a wide variety of nasty weather. Northern areas could see 6-12 inches of snow, thunderstorms could soak the South and areas in between may have to contend with an icy mix.

Oklahoma, southern Missouri and northern Arkansas have already seen significant ice accumulations. Icy roads are blamed for two traffic deaths in Oklahoma.

And the aviation tracking website FlightAware.com says more than 400 flights have been canceled around the country. Affected airports include Chicago's O'Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver International.

The weather isn't the only thing causing headaches for travelers. A baggage-equipment breakdown at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport lasted for hours, creating a backed-up line of travelers that stretched onto the sidewalk outside one of the terminals.
