GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- Volunteers plan to work through the weekend in Grand Rapids to fill sandbags as part of an effort to hold off West Michigan floodwaters.
The Grand Rapids Press reports 1,200 sandbags had been filled as of Friday morning, with a goal of filling 50,000 to keep the Grand River at bay.
Volunteers are assembling at a Grand Rapids wastewater plant garage. City workers are delivering sand to the site and transporting filled bags to points along the river.
Meanwhile, more flooding was affecting downtown Grand Rapids. WOOD-TV reports that crews pumped water out of the basements of two downtown hotels on Friday morning.
