"Dogs cool themselves via ventilation or breathing. And dogs that have narrowed airways, like pugs and bulldogs and older dogs have problems with their voice box. They don't cool themselves effectively. Those are the dogs that get themselves into trouble."
Dr. Matthew Beal - MSU veterinary teaching hospital
We preach it a lot but, don't just think about yourself when it gets this hot. It might just save a life, even on that might not be human.
MSU’s veterinary teaching hospital has treated several dogs for heat-related illnesses lately.
Pet owners need to make sure their water bowl is always full... And don't let them stay outside too long.
The hot weather can be even worse for dogs that have breathing problems, particularly for breeds that have narrow airways.
Vets also suggest walking your dog in the early morning or late evening, when the sun and pavement are cooler. Hot pavement can be dangerous to the sensitive pads on your dog’s paws.
