A test train and a freight train took runs on the new tracks early Thursday morning. A Blackman-Leoni Township public safety officer who witnessed the runs said they went smoothly.
Crews removed the wreckage from the tracks in Leoni Township, the site of Wednesday morning's derailment. Workers laid down new tracks well before the scheduled arrival of the first train. A team is expected to inspect the derailed cars Thursday morning to decide if they can be salvaged or not. If they can be, they'll be put on cars and taken to a railyard. If not, they'll be cut up and the pieces will be removed.
Ten people were taken to Allegiance Hospital. None were seriously injured. 68 people were on the Amtrak train headed from Detroit to Chicago when it hit a semi tractor-trailer that was stuck on the tracks.
