LEONI TWP - The driver a truck that was struck by an Amtrak train in Leoni Township Wednesday will be cited by police. Blackman-Leoni Township Public Safety Director Mike Jester says that the driver will be cited on a statute that reads: "The driver of a commercial motor vehicle shall not cross a railroad-highway grade crossing unless the vehicle has sufficient undercarriage clearance." This is a civil infraction.
The crash occurred after 8am on Wednesday at a railroad crossing on Portage Road near Michigan Avenue in Leoni Township. The truck was pulling a trailer that was very low, and became stuck on the tracks.
The crash caused the Amtrak passenger train's engine and another car to derail. The driver of the truck and the train's engineer were injured, as well as a handful of passengers. None of the injuries is believed to be serious.
