LEONI TOWNSHIP -- Drivers were taking it more slowly Thursday at the site of Wednesday's train derailment.

That's because the crossing near the intersection of Portage Road and Michigan Avenue in Leoni Township has quite a severe peak in it.

"Once you go over the top, if you've got any weight at all, you'll just get stuck right here," said Ed Grzesek, who has driven over that crossing for years.

Folks here, in fact, say bottoming out isn't uncommon.

"It's got quite a angle either direction, and with one of those low trucks like that -- there's no doubt you're gonna get hung up," said William Conklin, who owns a party store right next to the site of the crash.

We all know that's exactly what happened Wednesday -- a semi-trailer got stuck right on the tracks, and was T-boned by an Amtrack train.

Locals, like the man who owns this party store, say it's not the first time a vehicle has been stuck.

"I know about three weeks ago, there was one that got hung up there," Conklin said. "Any of the trucks that are the low-rider are gonna get hung up there."

Part of that, authorities say, was driver error. The semi never should've tried to cross that peak. The driver, in fact, was cited by the Blackman-Leoni Public Safety Department.

But drivers in the area say that road should also be fixed.

"You scrape the bottom of your car when you're coming or going out of there because there's such a dip there. It should be fixed," Grzesek said.

So we asked the Jackson County Road Commission if they plan to level off the road. By 6 p.m. Thursday, the managing director hadn't returned several calls.

Some say if nothing else, the county should at least place caution signs ahead of that crossing -- to alert folks of the peak.
