A new report found toxic flame retardants on many popular baby products, including car seats bought in Michigan.
Experts say these chemical compounds, specifically Tris chemicals, are linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and other negative health effects.
Products tested included bassinet pads, nursing pillows, changing pads, and car seats.
The study was conducted by the Washington Toxics Coalition and Safer States, two non-profit public health advocacy groups.
Two car seats tested in the study were bought in Michigan, and both were found to have the toxic chemicals.
The Michigan Network for Children's Environmental Health says children and families shouldn't be exposed to these chemicals, which can escape from household items and contaminate the air.
They say it's possible to make products flame-retardant without using harmful chemicals.
Michigan lawmakers in December introduced the Safe Children's Product Act, a bill that would give families the information they need to avoid products that contain hazardous chemicals.
People can also find consumer product ratings online for car seats and baby products.
