Three MSU Students Found Dead in 9 Days
Police say there might be a common thread

EAST LANSING -- Three Michigan State University students have been found dead in nine days -- all potentially drug- or alcohol-related, according to authorities.
"To hear these kinds of stats on campus is shocking, to say the least," says MSU senior Emery Jacques.
The latest body was found Friday at Cedar Village. East Lansing police came around noon to check on the man, who hasn't yet been named, after he didn't show up for work -- and found him dead.
Friends say he had been drinking the night before, according to police.
This past Monday, a 21-year-old MSU student found dead in his home on Milford Street -- Nicholas Charboneau, a senior in psychology.
And on Nov. 23, junior Jessica Hockensmith was discovered dead in her Lansing home on Magnolia Avenue.
Police say -- in all three cases -- drugs could be to blame.
Students we talked to Friday night on campus were shocked, and say they haven't seen much drug abuse here at MSU.
"I've seen isolated incidents just haphazardly," Jacques says. "I'm sure if you really look for it, you can find it. But generally, people are pretty good about sticking to what they know."
And many students say staying out of trouble is all about running in the right circles. Some also are calling for more drug education on campus.
"If it's something like that, maybe it's time to start talking about it more, 'cause I really haven't heard too much buzz about it," said MSU junior Jack Crawley.
Everyone here, regardless, is hoping this is the end of a tragic pattern.
