Summer Camps Take On the Heat
When it's this hot, most people are trying to stay indoors or in a swimming pool, but at MSU this weekend, it's just the opposite. Summer sports camps are kicking off in the midst of the heat wave.

More than two hundred field hockey players have come from across the state to sign up for MSU's summer camp.

"Coach was pretty insistant on them coming because it is a great time for them to come together as a team before the season starts," said Candy Wilkes-Scheper, a parent from Grand Rapids.

But is just happened to fall right in middle of heat spell, with temperatures above 90 degrees.

"I hope they'll understand that it's going to be hard and they'll give us breaks. I am a little nervous, I don't want to get a sunburn," said Laura Dent, a freshman field hockey player.

MSU coaches say the 3-session-a-day program incorporates breaks and hydration time, as well as a rotation in and out of the sun.

"We rotate the kids. A lot of times they'll be on Ralph Young Field, which is our outdoor field. We also use the Duffy builiding which is indoor. It basically is divided up. They'll do half their time on the field and half the time indoors," said MSU asst. field hockey coach Shawn Hindy.

Two trainers will monitor the girls on each field. Coaches and parents say the weather is part of the training.

"The girls will be doing their preseason in August and playing in August and September. It is essentially going to be realistic as to what they'll be doing for their season. Training in the heat is not a bad thing," said Hindy.

But the coaches will stay in hotels overnight while the players stay in dorms without air-conditioning.

I brought a fan, I hope it's not going to be too bad. It's not fair, but whatever," said Dent.

"But if you're in high school, staying in the dorm room is pretty fun. It doesn't matter," said Wilkes-Scheper.

Coaches agree having fun while learning a few skills is the goal.
