MATTAWAN, Mich. (AP) -- A firefighter who suffered a fatal heart attack while responding to a southwestern Michigan blaze was remembered at a vigil organized by high school students from his alma mater.
About 50 mourners attended the vigil Friday outside Mattawan High School for 22-year-old Nathan Fruin. The firefighter who joined the Mattawan department after graduating in 2009 died at a hospital after complaining of chest pains on Feb. 26.
Students Chris Hart and Brooke Maxam helped to organize the vigil that included songs and prayers. Hart says he wanted to create an "event that wasn't so sad."
More than 1,200 people attended Fruin's funeral Monday at a Portage church. About 250 police, fire and public safety officers walked up to his casket during a final salute before the service.
