JACKSON COUNTY - The Michigan State Police has completed its investigation into the accidental shooting of a 3-year-old boy in Jackson County last weekend. In a written statement released to News 10 late Friday afternoon, the state police say their investigation indicates there is "no evidence at the scene that led us to believe that this was anything more than a tragic accident."

The statement says the gun in the incident was registered to Mark Easter, who is a Jackson County Sheriff's Office deputy. The handgun was not Deputy Easter's service weapon. The statement says the gun was located on a dresser in the master bedroom of the home, believed to be out of reach of the child. "Evidence from the scene indicates that Michael was able to obtain the weapon before firing it."

State police say that the completed report will be forwarded to the Jackson County Medical Examiner's office. The statement also says that the Jackson County Prosecutor has asked the Attorney General to assign the case to another county for review. This is likely because Easter's father is a law enforcement officer in Jackson County.

Michael Easter accidentally shot himself with a gun Saturday, March 2 at the family's home in Liberty Township. The child's mother and siblings were home at the time. His father, Deputy Mark Easter, was on his way to work. The gun involved was not Deputy Easter's service gun.

I am sorry this happened, it is a tragic accident. But if the gun had been locked up this could have been prevented.
