LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Gov. Rick Snyder is preparing to sign legislation that his administration says would return the Michigan State Fairgrounds in Detroit to productive use.
The governor plans to sign two bills Monday aimed at setting the stage for possible redevelopment of the 162-acre site. The state would be allowed to sell the property, or transfer it to a local government for fair market value.
The bill would prohibit the site from being used for certain purposes such as a prison, casino, racetrack or railroad freight yard.
A recent consent agreement between the state and Detroit regarding the city's finances mentions possible development of a commuter rail station at the former state fairgrounds
Michigan's state fair was held at the Detroit location from 1905 through 2009.

How about building a manufacturing facility or drop forge shop so some of these laid off people can go back to work? In reality, I am sure it will get developed into fast food restaurants, stores, or Section 8 housing.

I was thrilled to read this and hope that there will be a new MI State Fair sometime in the future. It was always fun to go to to see the new baby animals, the horses, eat the food, ride on the rides and just have a good time. I was so sad when I attended the last State Fair in 2009, then reading that it wouldn't be returning. Now that there might be a chance it could be back, I think that's great. Many people can improve upon the old and yet bring back some of the long enjoyed favorites to a new State Fair. Thank you for this. I drove by where it used to be last Monday and thought, hmmm, they haven't torn all of it down and was glad. Do IT!
