At a press conference late Tuesday afternoon attended by the interim police chief Mike Yankowski, Mayor Virg Bernero, and Lansing School District Yvonne Camal Canuul, officials said that a 14 year old boy, a 17 yer old boy and a 17-year old girl, all Sexton High School students, received gunshot wounds at about 2:50p.m. in the vicinity of Ottawa Street and Forbes Street just north of Michigan Avenue, north of the high school. The wounds are non-life threatening.

Caamal Canul said, "This is a nightmare of any educator in the field... a nightmare of the Mayor... the superintendent...; to see three students victimized by sensless gun violence. Tomorrow we will be back at Sexton... a safe environment.. with conselors and crisis teams if a child wants to talk about what transpired... adding additional public safety officers.. working alongside LPD."

Police searched the neighborhood for a suspect or suspects, but no arrests have been made. The police do not believe this to be a random incident.

Lansing school spokesman Robert Kolt says all three of the students were new to Sexton High School this year. The shootings occurred about three blocks from the school, and they had left the school for the day. The school went into lock down for a short time, according to Kolt.

Police say at about the same time as the report came in of the shooting at Ottawa and Forbes street, a 15-year-old boy walked into a local hospital with a gunshot wound. Police said they have not yet determined if this gunshot victim is connected to the incident by the school.
