Senate Bill Would Limit DNR's Authority

A state Senate committee has approved a bill that would restrict the Michigan Department of Natural Resources' authority to base forest management decisions on the goal of promoting biological diversity.
The measure cleared the Natural Resources, Environment and Great Lakes committee Thursday on a party-line vote, with Republicans providing all the support. It now goes to the Senate floor.
The bill is sponsored by Sen. Tom Casperson of Escanaba. He says it's intended to prevent the DNR from turning large areas of state-owned land into the equivalent of wilderness where logging and motorized recreation would be off-limits.
The Michigan Environmental Council says the bill would stop the agency from basing forest management policies on science. University experts have testified that biodiversity is important for recreation as well as the environment.

Umm, excuse me, but one of the main reasons for the DNR's existence is to protect the state forests. If the Dept of Natural Resources doesn't have control over the state's natural resources, who will? Oh - that's right. The Legilature. OH MY GOSH - are you freaking kidding me?! Worst Idea Ever.

Why would you want the Department of Natural Resources try to **protect** the resources? Hellloooo. If they don't who will?!

I think the DNR has too much authority, I don't think they should be able to do traffic stops, etc. There NOT traffic cops.

What a surprise- Republicans are ignoring the environment in favor of the almighty dollar. This state needs its wilderness areas as much as, or more than, it needs more development. Allow the MDNR to do the job it was created to do!

Casperson, and the rest of the Republicans only want to open it up for Logging, and development! That way, they can make money from it,and they don't care about the impact it will have!
