Professors at Wayne State University and teachers in a suburban Detroit school district have separately agreed to eight-year contracts, weeks ahead of the effective date of Michigan's new right-to-work law.
The American Association of University Professors-American Federation of Teachers Local 6075 announced the Wayne State contract ratification Thursday.
Teachers in Warren Consolidated Schools north of Detroit are getting an eight-year contract extension. The school board approved it Wednesday.
The University of Michigan said Wednesday it reached a tentative agreement on a five-year contract with lecturers.
Republican Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation that bars unions from collecting mandatory fees or dues from workers they represent under collective bargaining agreements.
The law takes effect in late March. Backers say some schools are seeking to circumvent it by signing agreements before then.
