Road Crews Prepared for Winter Weather Despite Drained Budgets

"Every time it snows, it's taking more and more money away from our major capital projects, this year," said Chad Gamble, Lansing Public Service Director.

The salt trucks were filled and ready to go at the Clinton County Road Commission, Tuesday morning. Just enough to last the rest of the winter. At this point, it's about all that hasn't been completely wiped out.

"We've exceeded our winter maintenance budget. We're about 20 percent over," said Managing Director, Joe Pulver.

Overtime costs, fuel and truck repair ar the biggest culprits. Pulver says the $600,000 budget went dry sometime in mid-February. As expected, this latest round of winter weather will take away money from summer maintenance.

"Basic road maintenance, chip seal programs, any paving we had scheduled," said Pulver.

It's all taking a hit and cities like Lansing are in the same boat. Public Service Director Chad Gamble doesn't know exactly how far over budget Lansing is, but he's already bracing for the effects.

"Every time it snows, it's taking more and more money away from our major capital projects, this year," he said.

That includes road maintenance the city desperately needs. In the meantime, however, road crews will continue to work...while hoping for better weather.

"We do hope the weather will take a look at the calendar and realize that spring is almost here and give us some relief," said Gamble.

Lansing set aside $2 million, this year, for winter; a figure that was completely drained last month.
