Neighbors say Wayne Balcom was taken away in handcuffs on Monday morning from his Potterville family home. Those who knew him are still in disbelief.

"I've lived within a stone's throw away from Wayne for the last six years and wow, what a shocker," said neighbor Randy Schaub.

The investigation started in August 2012, after owners of Holt Family Practice came forward. Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth says the primary suspect responsible for the missing $130, 000 or more is the long time office manager Wayne Balcom.

"As I understand it he had access to checkbooks, he had access to cash, anything that would involve incoming revenue to the business," said Sheriff Wriggelsworth.

However, Balcom's family believe he's innocent, though investigators say Balcom has a history.

"He has prior conviction for check fraud...I think any embezzlement certainly is a violation of the trust. They paid him a salary on top of it, they paid him to embezzle money," said Sheriff Wriggelsworth.

The sheriff says the investigation wasn't easy. It involved digging through records from the past three years and they've forwarded the case to the prosecutor.

I have been a long time patient of Holt Family Practice. Sheriff Wrigglesworth is a patient there as well. The investigation has been going on for quite sometime. These doctors don't make alot of money, they are just general practice folks. I don't think he would have arrested if they didn't have solid evidence. What this man did is wrong.

Of course I have no idea whether this man is guilty or not; however, I do know physicians who had to change the combinations on their safes, fire staff, and suffer the knowledge that someone they trusted had robbed them through manipulating the receipts and log entries. In fact I once got a new position when my family doctor asked me to come to work for him because he had just discovered such embezzlement by a staff member and knew I would not do the same thing.
