DETROIT (AP) -- The body of a 55-year-old Detroit man has been found inside a sewer on the city's east side after he ventured below ground in search of materials to later sell illegally as scrap.
Police spokeswoman Officer Cassandra Lewis says the man's girlfriend was with him when he entered a manhole on East Grand Boulevard near Chene Street on Wednesday afternoon.
She called police about 3:20 p.m. when the man failed to emerge from the manhole.
Public works employees and police officers found the body and were trying late Wednesday afternoon to retrieve it from the sewer.
The man's death is under investigation and an autopsy is expected to determine exactly how the man died.
